The Stress-induced HEmE Receptor is a heme-binding protein involved in plant stress signalling and the regulation of cellular redox homeostasis. Functional studies in barley indicate that SHEER contributes to the response to oxidative stress. Barley lines lacking functional SHEER showed increased accumulation of reactive oxygen species following ozone exposure compared with wild-type plants. Expression of barley SHEER in an Arabidopsis thaliana sheer mutant restored oxidative-stress tolerance, supporting conservation of its function. SHEER is therefore implicated in heme-associated signalling and protection against ozone-induced oxidative stress.
